ReachOut Water Solutions Returns from Mumbai

June 16, 2009 - ReachOut Water Solutions returned from a field trip from Mumbai, India. The field trip was sponsored through a generous grant from the Acara Insititute. The team of Mark Lundgren, Brian Bell, Tony Schrempp, and Karthikayan Kumar spent two weeks exploring the water issues is the slums of Mumbai. They visited eight different slum communities with various ranges of water service ranging from only intermittent quantities of contaminated water to full scale community run and managed systems that were able to supply 24 hour water to community members. In addition to field work, the team made important institutional and financial contacts that will further ReachOut's program in India. A full field report is forth-coming. ReachOut Water Solutions Wins Acara Challenge!

May 4, 2009 - ReachOut Water Solutions team has won the 1st ever Acara Challenge with its Slum Water Program to provide water to the slums of Mumbai, India: the Slum Water Program. The Acara Challenge is an annual challenge to universities and high schools to come up with businesses that create sustainable solutions to the world's many difficult development issues. This years competition was to create a sustainable business model to address the water crisis in the slums of Mumbai. ReachOut competed against two teams from the University of Minnesota, three teams from IIT Chicago, and one local Minneapolis high school team from Leonardo's Basement. Each team was partnered with a corresponding team from IIT Bombay. The judging was carried out by a panel of industry experts.
